That Beautiful Sound

Melanie just asked, “is Mollie home from work yet?” I had just started wondering the same thing but I said, “I think she just pulled in the driveway.” 

A few seconds later we heard the garage door opened. That beautiful sound. 

No late night “every parent’s worst nightmare” phone calls.

No racing to the hospital. 

This is grace. 

Safely home at the end of the day. 

There is an episode of “The West Wing” where the President’s daughter questioned if there was anything she could ever be or achieve to make her larger than life father happy with her. It closes with the father looking right into her eyes saying, “The only thing you ever had to do to make me happy was come home at the end of the day.”

Hyperbole for sure. 

Certainly there are other things besides making it safely home at the end of the day that children can do to make their parents happy. 

But at a deeper level…truer words have rarely been spoken.
